ScholarshipsThe Mensa Education & Research Foundation's college scholarship program bases its awards totally on essays written by the applicants. Consideration is not given to grades, academic program or financial need.
The program is very large in the geographic area it covers (usually about 75 percent of the country), the number of applications (more than 9,000 in recent years), and the amount of money available for awards (an average of $80,000 each year). U.S. applicants need not be Mensa members. However, Young Mensa members may apply for both these scholarship programs and the additional Mensa Member Scholarship program. The scholarship application process opens Sept. 15 and closes Jan. 15. Find out more on the Mensa Foundation website. The Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) and the Rotaract Club of Birmingham have partnered to launch the first state-specific scholarship database - AchieveAlabama.org.
Launched in conjunction with College Application Week, Achieve Alabama is an online scholarship resource providing students, educators, and parents with an effective scholarship search tool and college preparation resource that has the capability to guide students through the entire college admission process. According to the Alabama Commission on Higher Education, in 2015, 50 percent of Alabama high school graduates were enrolled in an Alabama public university or college, but one third of those students never received any financial aid. Founded by the Rotaract Club of Birmingham and the non-profit College Admissions Made Possible (CAMP) and Cappex, to make scholarship funding more readily available to high school students across Alabama, the site aims to bridge the information gap on how students learn about, research, and ultimately receive scholarships. The site is cost-free and is available to all high school students in the state. It houses thousands of university-specific and private scholarships. The site also focuses specifically on local scholarship dollars that are awarded each year by Alabama businesses and private foundations. Registration for the site is free and voluntary, and all student data is secure and protected in accordance with applicable state and federal laws. No student information is ever provided to any third parties unless a student opts in to share information with colleges.
