Skills and Trades AHB Foundation Generally Supports:
Building Science/Construction Engineering
Civil Engineering
Carpentry/Cabinetry
Electrical Engineering
Drafting and Design
Electrical Technology
HVAC/HVACR
Landscaping
Masonry
Plumbing
Sustainable ConstructionNote: This list is not exclusive to other trades. Should an applicant demonstrate that their education will lead to a career in residential building, the AHB Foundation Scholarship Committee will consider the application for possible funding.
Factors the AHB Foundation Scholarship Committee Considers:
Career Goal:The AHBF supports applicants who are pursuing an education in the residential building industry. See the above list for careers the Foundation generally supports. Be sure to tell us how your chosen career relates to the housing industry.
Past Recipient:The AHBF encourages past recipients of the scholarship to reapply and gives extra weight to previous recipients.
Financial Need:The AHBF recognizes financial need as an important factor in awarding scholarships.Leaving financial information blank on an application does not work to the benefit of the applicant.
Academic Achievement:The AHBF supports academic achievement but knows not all students are A students. The GPA is not necessarily the most important aspect of a student’s transcript. The scholarship committee is interested in what courses the student has taken, how the courses relate the residential housing industry, as well as the GPA and any standardized testing scores provided.
Extra-curricular Activities:The AHBF is interest in hearing what you do inside and outside of school. It gives the scholarship committee a better idea of who they may be supporting.
Letters of Recommendation:The AHBF wants to know what others think of you. Please include a letter from a teacher, supervisor or a Home Builders Association of Alabama member, preferably on their work letterhead, and must be signed.. Two letters are better than one. Make sure they are signed!
Completeness of Application:The AHBF scholarship committee can’t review applications which are incomplete. Be sure to submit all required documents. Don’t forget to fill in every single question on the application itself. If you would like to write an essay, describing your career goals, be our guest. The committee enjoys reading essays.
Application Deadline:The AHBF scholarship committee meets early April every year to select scholarship recipients. Its’ very important that you get your application in by March 15 so that we can submit it to the committee. Late applications are not guaranteed to be included in the scholarship committee’s review.
Applicants can expect to hear whether they are a scholarship recipient by the end of April, via mail. For questions on the application or the application process, please contact Debbie Baxley at 334-834-3006 or at: [email protected]
